Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup whole milk, warmed to about 110°F (43°C)

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 package (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 large egg, at room temperature

1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and finely chopped

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/3 cup packed brown sugar

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened (for filling)

1 cup powdered sugar (for glaze)

1-2 tablespoons milk (for glaze)

Instructions

Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warmed milk with the granulated sugar. Sprinkle the active dry yeast on top and let it sit undisturbed for about 5-10 minutes, or until it becomes frothy and bubbly. This means your yeast is activated and ready to use.

Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the melted butter, the egg, vanilla extract, and the activated yeast mixture. Mix until the ingredients come together to form a soft dough.

Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a little more flour as needed.

First Rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm environment for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

Prepare Filling: While the dough is rising, combine the finely chopped apples, ground cinnamon, nutmeg, brown sugar, and softened butter in a separate bowl. Mix until the apples are fully coated in the spiced buttery mixture.

Roll Out Dough: Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release the air. Transfer it to a floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle about 1/4-inch thick, measuring approximately 12x18 inches.

Assemble the Rolls: Evenly spread the apple mixture over the rolled-out dough, ensuring every corner is covered. Starting from one of the long edges, carefully roll the dough into a tight log. Pinch the seam closed to seal the roll.

Cut into Rolls: With a sharp knife or unflavored dental floss, slice the log into 12 equal pieces. Arrange the rolls in a greased baking dish, ensuring there is some space between each one for expansion.

Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a clean cloth and let them rise again in a warm area for about 30 minutes, or until they appear puffed up.

Preheat Oven: While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Bake: Once the second rise is complete, place the rolls in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and fully cooked through.

Prepare Glaze: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1-2 tablespoons of milk until the mixture is smooth and well combined. Adjust the thickness of the glaze by adding more milk if necessary.

Glaze the Rolls: After removing the rolls from the oven, allow them to cool for about 5 minutes in the pan. While still warm, drizzle the glaze generously over the top of the rolls.

Serve: Enjoy these heavenly sweet rolls warm or at room temperature. Savor the delightful flavors of the apples and cinnamon with every bite!
