Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 lb ground pork

1 cup Italian-style breadcrumbs

½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

1 large egg, at room temperature

1 tablespoon fresh basil, finely chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried basil)

1 tablespoon fresh parsley, finely chopped (or 1 teaspoon dried parsley)

2-3 cloves garlic, minced

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for added heat)

1 jar (24 oz) marinara sauce (store-bought or homemade)

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Mix the Meatball Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and ground pork. Add in the breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, chopped basil, chopped parsley, minced garlic, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if you like a kick!). Mix all the ingredients gently with your hands, being careful not to overwork the mixture, until everything is well incorporated.

Form the Meatballs: Using your hands, scoop out portions of the mixture and roll them into meatballs that are approximately 1.5 inches in diameter. Place each meatball on the prepared baking sheet, ensuring they are evenly spaced for consistent cooking.

Bake the Meatballs: Transfer the baking sheet to the preheated oven and bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes, or until they are golden brown and cooked through. The internal temperature should reach 160°F (70°C) for safe consumption.

Prepare the Sauce: While the meatballs are baking, pour the marinara sauce into a saucepan and heat it gently over medium heat, stirring occasionally until warmed through.

Assemble the Dish: Once the meatballs are done baking, carefully remove them from the oven and place them in a large baking dish. Pour the warm marinara sauce over the meatballs, ensuring they are completely coated.

Add Mozzarella: Evenly sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the meatballs and marinara sauce, allowing it to create a beautiful topping.

Final Bake: Return the baking dish to the oven for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the mozzarella cheese is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden.

Serve: Remove from the oven and let the dish cool for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil leaves for a pop of color and flavor. Serve the meatballs warm, ideally paired with spaghetti, crusty bread, or enjoyed on their own!
